Where does your food come from?

an enslaved women in the tea industry
this can easily be regarded as the big question of the year...where does it from from? and who is harmed in the process? what safety precautions are sidestepped to make sure that grapes sell at $1.99 a pound? under what conditions do people live who cut sugar cane that winds up in cereal, coffee, bread, and  the host of packaged foods consumed daily?

below are a links to a few of the many videos you can find on the terrible conditions under which humans are forced or coerced to work so that we can have candy bars, pop, bread, salad dressing, chocolate, cucumbers and a host of other fresh and packaged foods.

a related issue is the use of toxic chemicals as fertilizer. the toxins get in the food and impact the workers involved in the handling of the produce. here is a video on sewage sludge sprayed on farms that provide food to u.s. grocery stores: http://vimeo.com/24854061

on a slightly different issue, here we see another example of the experimentation on communities of color by the government.  in 2008, toxic sludge was used to cover the back yards in baltimore and east st. louis and passed off as an effort to green the neighborhoods.  See: http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_11525.cfm

after reviewing these, i wonder about your thoughts? if you eat foods with sugar, will we rethink our practices?
